Good Morning Friends!
It is now week 2 of the national quarantine from COVID-19. Fun times! People all over the United States are having to learn new skills. Parents, who now have to homeschool are developing a new appreciation for teachers. Grocery store clerks are continuously putting themselves in the line of fire. People are slowing down a little and smelling the roses. My husband and I were finally able to finish this house. It’s done! And it is beautiful. Ironically, this dark time has become one of real positive changes.
But, with all the positives that we as a culture are seeing, it can be really boring to be at home all day. I mean, seriously, there’s only so much binge-watching Netflix or at-home workouts or reading you can do. So, I thought what better way to mentally survive a quarantine than to dream up some big, beautiful family vacation!
So, for grins and giggles, let’s plan a vacation. FYI: This would be a great family activity. Get the kids together and brainstorm.
First, where are you going? Somewhere sophisticated, like Paris. Somewhere exotic, like India. Somewhere homey, like a log cabin in the woods. Or a staycation? (Although who wants to do that after 2-3 weeks in their house. Personally, I am going to Boston. I like the more sophisticated side of life. Remember, this is all hypothetical, so money and time don’t matter. The point is learning to plan it.
Second, you need to do some preliminary research. What is the culture? What is the weather like? What customs do the people have that you should participate in? How should you dress? Should you carry cash or card, or do you need to get money exchanged? If so, what is the exchange rate? Would you have access to more funds should you run out in the middle of the trip? What will you eat? Where will you sleep? What kinds of things do you want to do and see? Make a list. (I love lists). Better yet, have your kids make the list. ( The less you have to do, the better, right).
Third, make a packing list.
- Clothing
- Activities to do during the trip
- Toiletries
- Necessary Technology
- Don’t overpack. You don’t want to lug around unnecessary stuff during your vacation.
Fourth, if this were an actual vacation, you would want to actually book your accommodations. Are you staying in a hotel, doing the classic tourist move; or are you doing an apartment swap, living as the locals do? Don’t forget the other ways to travel- camping, backpacking, couch-surfing.
After you have finished designing your dream vacation, have your kids dress up like they are on the vacation and shoot a documentary style video of the “vacation.” Who knows, maybe one day, you’ll get to take this trip. You can also roll in movies and videos about your destination to help your kids learn all about the geography and culture of the destination. The ideas and applications are endless.
Have fun! Until next week!
